1020 is a true carbon steel while 8620 is a steel alloy that is not carbon steel but shares some properties (like rusting) of real carbon steel. "8620 Carbon Steel" does not really exist and is a marketing term coined by the golf industry.
1008 vs 1010 Steel Comparison The following is a comparison of the chemical composition and mechanical properties of 1008 steel and 1010 steel. This may be useful for machining purposes or when making purchases of either steel grade.
AISI 1020 Steel is low hardenability and low tensile carbon steel carbon steel. And its Brinell hardness of 119 235 and tensile strength of 410-790 MPa. It is normally used in turned and polished or cold drawn condition. AISI 1020 steel ( JIS S20C steel) is resistant to induction hardening or flame hardening due to its low carbon content.
1020 is a general purpose low tensile low hardenability carbon steel generally supplied in the cold drawn or turned and polished condition, with a typical tensile strength range 410 - 790 Mpa, and Brinell hardness range 119 - 235.
At Associated Steel, we pride ourselves on offering an in-depth selection of alloy and carbon steels. These materials include hot roll heat treated, cold finished annealed, turned ground and polished, heat treated hollow stock, induction hardened linear shafting, pre-keyed shafting, keystock, and custom manufactured wear rails.

Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel, is a metal alloy, a combination of two elements, iron and carbon, where other elements are present in quantities too small to affect the properties. The only other alloying elements allowed in plain-carbon steel are manganese (1.65% max), silicon (0.60% max), and copper (0.60% max).

A part casted with 1020 steel, but need carburize ( .012 MIN DP) to HRC 30~45 in case. My questions are: 1. Can we test the hardness with HRA or superficial scale and convert it to HRC? 2. The size in section is 3/8" square, if hardness in surface measured at HRC 40, what is the hardness in core ? 3.

These conversion charts are provided for guidance only as each scales uses different methods of measuring hardness. The right hand column show an approximate equivalent tensile strength.
Carbon steels is a category of steel, which contains 0.12 to 2% carbon. This steel category gains hardness and strength with heat treatment when the percentage of carbon content increases but the ductility is reduced. AISI 1020 carbon steel is a commonly used plain carbon steel. It has a good , s460ql steel h beam
AISI 1018 Steel: This type of steel shares much of its properties with 1020 steel such as ease of machining, weldability and strength. It is the most common cold rolled steel available in the market; AISI 1006 Mild Steel: This type of mild steels which have low hardness and are used in drawing. They are also very machinable and can be welded , s460ql steel h beam
AISI 1020 Carbon Steel General Characteristics of Low-Carbon Steel 1020. C1020 is a general purpose carbon steel that may be hardened by carburizing or by other surface treatments.
AISI 1020 is a low hardenability and low tensile carbon steel with Brinell hardness of 119 , s460ql steel h beam AISI 1020 steel is slowly cooled and re-heated at 870C - 900C followed by holding until the temperature remains constant all over the section and quenching in water, oil or brine.
The Table chart below gives typical mechanical characteristics for selected carbon steel properties. For all critical applications, verify to the applicable industry or requisite material / steel standard
Both ASTM A36 carbon steel and SAE-AISI 1020 steel are iron alloys. Their average alloy composition is basically identical. There are 31 material properties with values for both materials. Properties with values for just one material (1, in this case) are not shown.
The steel has a Brinell hardness range of 119 to 235. The Brinell hardness test method measures the indentation of a weight-loaded hardened steel or carbide ball on a material and is an indicator of that material's strength, or hardness. 1020 steel density is .284 pounds per cubic inch. 1020 steel is composed mostly of manganese and carbon.
AISI SAE ASTM 1018 steel has many semifinished and final products such as round bar, flat bar, steel tubing and pipes, etc. 1018 carbon steel is versatile and is commonly used in a variety of carburized parts such as gears, pinions, ratchets, worms, pins, chain pins, pins, machine parts, tools and mold components.
C1020 steel demonstrates high machinability capacity and offers good welding properties. The chemical composition of C 1020 plates include carbon (0.170 to 0.230)%max, manganese e (0.300 to 0.600)% max, phosphorus around 0.040% and sulphuric around 0.050%. This chemical composition of the alloy depends on the physical dimension of the 1020 , s460ql steel h beam
Heat treater's can be brutal and ding's are common. If you have long parts make sure and state on the drawing and P.O. that the parts are to be racked vertically. Also call-out a straightness spec. ie: Parts to be straight to .005" after heat treat. You should also specify a core hardness usually 35 to 40 Rc.

Rockwell Hardness of steel 1018 ranges from 71 to 78 converted from Brinell hardness. The difference from 71 to 78 is caused by manufacturing metods and/or purity of the alloy.
